Note: A useful term that I didn’t mention above is the term karyotype. A karyotype is an image that shows the chromosomes in a human diploid cell, artificially paired up by size and staining pattern. In each of the pairs, one of the chromosomes is from the mother, and the other is from the father.
Here are two karyotypes. The one on the left is of a person who is chromosomally male. The one on the right is for a female.
Male Karyotype | Female Karyotype |
1. How Is Sex Determined in Mammals (and in human beings)?
- In mammals, the chromosomes can be classified as autosomes or sex chromosomes. Whereas autosomes are pairs of chromosomes that are the same in both males and females, sex chromosomes differ between the sexes and determine biological sex.
- Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes:
- Pairs 1–22 are autosomes, the same in males and females.
- The 23rd pair are sex chromosomes:
- Females: XX
- Males: XY
- The Y Chromosome’s Role:
- Contains the SRY gene, which triggers testes development and later, testosterone production.
- Testosterone causes the body to develop male traits.
- The Sex Chromosome in the Sperm Determines the Offspring’s Sex:
- Eggs always carry an X chromosome.
- Sperm can carry either an X or a Y chromosome:
- X sperm + X egg = Female (XX)
- Y sperm + X egg = Male (XY)
- 50:50 Sex Ratio:
- Equal chances of sperm carrying X or Y fertilizing the egg explain the near-equal male-to-female birth ratio.
2. How Is Sex Determined in Birds?
- Birds also have chromosomal sex determination, but it works differently:
- Females: ZW chromosomes
- Males: ZZ chromosomes
- In Birds, the Sex Chromosome in the Egg Determines the Sex of the Offspring
- Female eggs can carry either Z or W chromosomes.
- Male sperm only carries Z chromosomes:
- Z sperm + Z egg = Male (ZZ)
- Z sperm + W egg = Female (ZW)
- Result: The sex ratio is also about 50:50 in birds.
3. Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination (in some Reptiles):
- In some reptiles (like sea turtles, crocodiles, and tuataras), temperature during embryonic development determines sex:
- Sea Turtles:
- Warmer temperatures → Females
- Cooler temperatures → Males
- Tuataras:
- Warmer temperatures → Males
- Cooler temperatures → Females
- Crocodiles:
- Low and high temperatures → Females
- Intermediate temperatures → Males
- Sea Turtles:
4. Haplodiploidy in Ants, Bees, and Wasps:
- A unique system called haplodiploidy determines sex:
- Males (haploid): Develop from unfertilized eggs (1 set of chromosomes).
- Females (diploid): Develop from fertilized eggs (2 sets of chromosomes).
- Genetic Relatedness:
- Female workers are 75% related to their sisters (closer than mammal siblings, who are 50% related).
- This high relatedness may explain their cooperation to support the queen and colony.

[a] The sex chromosomes.
[q] What sex chromosomes do females and males have?
[a] Females: XX, Males: XY.
[q] What does the SRY gene on the Y chromosome do?
[a] It triggers testes development and later testosterone production, leading to male traits.
[q] Which parent’s gamete determines the sex of the offspring in humans and other mammals?
[a] The sperm from the male parent.
[q] In mammals, what combinations of sex chromosomes result in a female? What result in a male?
[a] Female: XX, Male: XY.
[q] Why is the male-to-female birth ratio close to 50:50 in mammals?
[a] Equal chances of sperm carrying X or Y fertilizing the egg.
[q] How is sex determined in birds?
[a] By the sex chromosomes: Females are ZW, and males are ZZ.
[q] Which parent’s gamete determines the sex of the offspring in birds?
[a] The egg from the female parent.
[q] What combinations of sex chromosomes result in a male offspring in birds? A female offspring?
[a] Male: ZZ, Female: ZW.
[q] Why is the male-to-female birth ratio close to 50:50 in birds?
[a] Equal chances of eggs carrying Z or W being fertilized.
[q] What determines the sex of some reptiles?
[a] Temperature during embryonic development.
[q] How does temperature affect sex determination in sea turtles?
[a] Warmer temperatures → Females, Cooler temperatures → Males.
[q] How does temperature affect sex determination in tuataras?
[a] Warmer temperatures → Males, Cooler temperatures → Females.
[q] How does temperature affect sex determination in crocodiles?
[a] Low and high temperatures → Females, Intermediate temperatures → Males.
[q] What is haplodiploidy?
[a] A system of sex determination where males are haploid (1 set of chromosomes) and females are diploid (2 sets of chromosomes).
[q] How do males develop in haplodiploid species like ants, bees, and wasps?
[a] From unfertilized eggs.
[q] How do females develop in haplodiploid species like ants, bees, and wasps?
[a] From fertilized eggs.
[q] Why are female worker bees more closely related to their sisters than mammal siblings are?
[a] They share 75% of their genes because they inherit 100% of their father’s genes and half of their mother’s.
