[a] Membranes allow certain molecules to pass through but not others. In other words, membranes are selectively permeable. (Note that the term semi-permeable means just about the same as selectively permeable, and the two are used interchangeably).

[a] Phospholipids have a polar, hydrophilic head and a nonpolar, hydrophobic tail. Consequently, when mixed with water they’ll spontaneously organize themselves into a bilayer. In the bilayer, the heads face out as they form hydrogen bonds with the water that’s in the cell exterior and in the cytoplasm. By contrast, tails cluster together, avoiding water, and forming weak, intermolecular bonds with one another.
